Mike stands his post as conductor to welcome train riders safely aboard.

Mike followed in his father’s, a brother’s, two uncles’, and two cousins’ footsteps when he signed on with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad in Scranton, PA a couple weeks after his 18th birthday in 1969.  He began as a fireman and then moved on to become an engineer.  In 1976 he moved to Conrail during its first full year of operation to work in supervision.  Mike worked both the freight and passenger side as Conrail in its early years also operated commuter service and provided train and engine service employees for Amtrak.  Working underground in Penn Station in New York City wasn’t his “cup of tea,” and Mike welcomed a transfer to Corning, NY in the fall of 1978.  Other transfers moved him to Buffalo, NY, the “Chemical Coast” in New Jersey, then back to Buffalo, and finally Syracuse, NY.  Conrail was taken over by CSX Railroad in June of 1999 while Mike continued to work in Syracuse.  He retired from CSX in the fall of 2006 after 37 years of railroading and moved back to Tioga County, PA.  Mike sometimes volunteers with the TTS as a train engineer.  However, he prefers to volunteer as a conductor because he enjoys meeting the people who ride the train and letting them in on some of his knowledge of the area, the local railroad, and running a rail operation.
