Tioga Transportation Society

The Tioga Transportation Society is an organization of men, women, and teens interested in maintaining and operating the Tioga Central Railroad. By assisting with the railroad, they are helping to keep alive a part of America’s great railroad heritage and are helping the many thousands of people who visit Tioga County, PA and Tioga Central Railroad each year to develop an appreciation of that heritage.

Many of the engineers, conductors, trainmen, and brakemen that crew Tioga Central trains first visited the railroad just to ride the train. Liking what they saw, they joined the Tioga Transportation Society to become active volunteers. They took special training courses to learn the rudiments of safe train operations. Then they worked side-by-side with experienced crew members to become proficient in hands-on standard professional railroading practices. Ultimately, they became qualified and certified to fill train crew positions.

In addition to the Tioga Transportation Society members who enter train service, others provide a variety of essential services. These include those who work as ticket agents and gift shop personnel. Some members work in the restoration and maintenance of buildings, locomotive, and rolling stock, while others provide valuable assistance with promotion and advertising. Running a railroad requires the work of many individuals having a wide variety of abilities and talents.

A number of persons who began their railroading experience as volunteers in the Tioga Transportation Society have gone on to find employment in the professional world of railroading. Others have found that the skills they learned as volunteers served them well in career placement and advancement. No matter what your abilities, previous experience, or future plans, if you like trains, there is surely a place for you in the Tioga Transportation Society.

Mission Statement:
The Tioga Transportation Society is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization dedicated to promoting, preserving, and fostering a public appreciation of the railroad heritage in and about, but not limited to, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Our Society helps provide the operating crew and support personnel which helps, in part, make Tioga Central’s operation possible.
